Pretend you’re standing on an imaginary line. There, a shadow splits you in half. Light & dark. This position represents every juncture in our lives and in our projects — at this intersection we have a choice. You can go back, into the dark, or you can step forward, into the light.
Or maybe you’re not standing at the divide of light and shadow. Maybe you’re looking on from afar — it’s easy to label, to categorize and write off. It’s simpler to see any level of darkness and decide it’s not worth stopping.
Finding light is not always the easiest practice. Moving away from the oft-indulgent darkness is challenging, but it’s the direction that improves things over the long run. Move toward the light. Build. Improve. Find good.
For this pack we worked with Zachery Elwart of Detroit, Michigan. His pride in and optimism for the people of Detroit is overwhelming. He's a truly inspiring creator. It’s an honor to collaborate with someone so actively shining their light and seeing possibility in the shadows.
SOME WORDS FROM 18-YEAR-OLD ZACHERY ELWART:
"When you think of Detroit what is the first thing you think of?
Probably not the best and brightest, right? I live in Detroit and it's always... interesting to hear the thoughts and opinions about my city from outsiders. Immediately people’s minds jump to the crime, abandoned buildings, and dirtiness of the city. I don’t think this perception is the whole picture. Unfortunately not everyone can see things like I do. That’s why in my work I try to show the hope for future Detroit. My goal for these few photos is to leave you with one thought and one thought only: that Detroit is looking up, and there is a great hope in this city. As I walk through the city and interact with people I see a light and a glimmer of faith in what the future holds. It won't be easy, but we will look and walk into the light as each day passes. If we focus on the positive things and find the good in everything, it can and will take us to amazing places."
